The XV U.B.I. Congress
by Mrs. Daniela Schifano
Sanremo, 1st - 3 rd April 2011
Mrs.Daniela Schifano took part in the XV Congress U.B.I. with a stone from the particular story and then tell us her experience: thanks to her images and her reflection we will be able to live a few days completely dedicated to suiseki, including research in nature, exhibitions and teaching. In fact, Daniela has wanted to take advantage of the trip to San Remo to devote a few days of "hunting" with Mr.Felice Colombari. She went on to San Remo, where she is adept in the display of a stone not easy reading, she heard a lecture by Mrs. Luciana Queirolo, she participated in the trip organized to research the sandstones in the area of Imperia, and how all she has poked around in the vast and rich area dedicated to shopping. In thecover image, the AIAS space, that welcomes visitors at the entrance and exhibits two Suiseki winners of previous editions.
The research |
How can I resist?
The long way towards San Remo, which began several months ago with the choice of the stone to be exhibited at UBI Congress and of the matching elements, this year had necessarilly to include a pause in the areas where it is probably easier to find beautiful stones. I underline it because it is not obvious or easy to find beautiful stones: beyond the knowledge of areas, types and materials we also need a good deal of luck!
However, an early Spring has facilitated my programs, allowing me to spend two days in the hinterland of Lavagna, in the midst of an untouched nature together with my friend and partner Mr. Felice Colombari.

We devoted two days of hunting to the streams, looking for stones which had their forms shaped by the incessant action of water. It 's a very nice kind of research: the banks offer a variety of stones to be looked at, selected and evaluated.

Regenerated and in better spirits, with a boot full of stones, I went to San Remo for a different kind of experience, to live another moment in the life of a stone: the display as suiseki.

The U.B.I. Congress |

Nearly 100 bonsai and 15 suiseki on display: these are the numbers of an event which was exemplarily organized by the staff of the Cultural Bonsai Drynemethum Association.
The Congress was held in the structure of Palafiori in three different areas: on the first floor we were welcomed by five tokonoma set up by some Bonsai schools which are nationally recognized, representing the art of bonsai through a famous bonsai. The art of Suiseki was instead represented by AIAS Association which exhibited two famous stones: a suiseki by Mr. Ezio Piovanelli, the winner in the UBI Congress in 2004 and a suiseki by Mrs. Luciana Queirolo, the 'Fortress of the Dragon ", winner in the UBI Congress of 2006.
On the second floor a second area was dedicated to the shopping with about thirty exhibitors. Here the fans were able to find everything and more: from pre-bonsai to bonsai, from vases to exposure tables, to accessories which are usually more difficult to be found, such as accent plants and tempai. You could also find material for the care and maintenance of bonsai: compost , tools and fertilizers. In the same hall were hosted some local artisans including a famous master of blade, a master of slate, a skilled craftsman in the processing of the root and a weaver of baskets who created his masterpieces with natural products. The offer was completed by some stands for suiseki fans who could choose out of specimens on sale. There was even an artificial lake in which we were able to admire the famous Koi Carps !

The third floor was devoted to the exhibition itself with 100 spaces set up to host the bonsai and Suiseki of U.B.I .members, the conference room and the area for workshops and demonstrations concerning Ikebana, Shodo and Sumi-e.
This year 80 bonsai and 10 Suiseki were admitted to Catalogue and on Friday evening, after the opening ceremony, it was possible to have the response about this first selection . The single judge for suiseki, Mr.Sergio Malpeli, excluded from the catalogue five stones which, unlike other editions, remained on display.

Now I stop working as a reporter to comment on the stone by Mrs. Luciana Queirolo: in the picture taken from afar which allows us to admire the tokonoma as a whole, does it look like an animal? a rugged landscape? what else? Undoubtedly, this stone with a not immediate interpretation immobilizes us in a personal observation and evocation. Then a closer view allows to discover a rough area, crevices and hiding places, caves and shelters, which I hope I caught in my pictures.

Due to its exclusion from the catalogue, I’d like to say something about the stone that I presented: a doha with highly intriguing surface, patina and colour. Herewith I just want to thank who gave it to me, the Korean collector Mr. Juneu Kim, who looked for it for me in a far river in California, the Kern River, thus becoming a symbol of common view born on the Web: the presentation of this suiseki at the U.B.I. Congress may be considered like a public declaration of this friendship. It 's a basalt stone which received a widespread approval despite its exclusion and this is enough for me.
I also thank those who contributed with their professional competence to the creation of the exhibition: Mr. Fabrizio Buccini for the daiza, and Mr. Sergio Biagi for the table.

I put on the clothes of a reporter to describe the day of Saturday. It was a busy day full of events : from the conference by Mrs. Luciana Queirolo about the relationship between shape and colour, to the afternoon of research in the area of Imperia, led by Mr. Fabrizio Beltrame, up to a gala dinner at the Casino of Sanremo . While the events followed one another, the committee worked for the elections: all of them deserve our thanks. But I proceed.
The day began with a meeting with Mr. Marco Favero, another fan known through the web who came from France where he lives, just not to miss the opportunity of meeting personally. We exchanged our first comments about the stones on display. |
On Saturday morning Mrs. Luciana Queirolo led us to discover the value of colour in a suiseki. In fact, we used to consider dark colours as favourite for a stone but the kaleidoscope of images of Japanese Suiseki selected by Luciana showed how colour can increase the charm of a stone, accompanying its shape and provoking further suggestions.
With her boundless curiosity, Luciana also proposed pictures showing similarities between Western and Eastern material: in conclusion, "The Earth is round!"
Eventually Luciana also read some statements by the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, who in "The Spiritual in Art" tells about a pictorial art based on the language of colour: in it Kandinsky gives information on the emotional properties of each tone and colour, linking them to the response of the soul. "White is the conventional sum of all the colours of the rainbow but it's a world where all these colours have disappeared. As a matter of fact it is a wall of absolute silence, inwardly we feel it as a non-sound. However, it is a silence of birth, full of potential; it is the pause between a bar and the other in a musical performance which presages other sounds. Black is the absence of light, it is a non-colour,it is off like a completely burned fire. It is a silence of death, it is the final pause of a musical performance, however, unlike white (where the colour inside is already weak) it brings out any colour .... A pictorial composition is formed by colour which, in spite of being limitless in our mind, also assumes a shape in reality. Colour and shape can not exist separately in a composition. The combination of form and colour is based on the special relationship between individual forms and individual colours. If a colour is associated with its privileged form, the effects and emotions arising from colours and shape are enhanced. "
Snack, quick change of clothes and a large group of Suiseki lovers was ready for the hike in the afternoon: Mr. Fabrizio Beltrame led us near Imperia, in search of local stones, usually sandstone, but also the rarest palombino.
And while Mr. Angelo Attinà probably found the most beautiful stone of the trip, I put in my backpack some blocks covered with earth that will be cleaned and discovered little by little. As in many research situations, in fact, the stones were, as in the photo on the right, completely covered with more or less hard soil and only a quick brush on the spot revealed the heart under the bark !

And almost without realizing it, it was time for the gala dinner which was held in the elegant rooms of the Casino of Sanremo. It 's the classic moment of waiting and awards but also when you can relax and appreciate food, company and good music. The organizing club also provided admission to the halls of the casino and one free chip to try the luck.

It could be all but it is not: how is it possible to describe the rumours, comparisons, meetings, projects, disappointment, rewards but also the criticisms that are always useful when they are constructive? A Congress is made up of many of these moments and just counting prizes debases its meaning.
Our friend Mr. Fabrizio Petruzzello was elected in the new Board. To him we wish good work. To you all, however, faithful or casual readers of these pages, goodbye, hopefully personally, to Arco di Trento, for the next edition of the U.B.I. Congress .
